I NEVER SAID GOODBYE TO MY FATHER
Words and Music by Alan Chapman

I never said goodbye to my father.
It happened quickly many miles away.
So I gathered up my sadness and I went there
Too late for any words I had to say.

I missed that one last chance to say "I love you"
And tell him I was proud to be his son,
And talk as joyfully about what he had done for me
As he would talk about the things I'd done.

I look through old photographs and letters that he wrote,
Trying to picture him as he was.
Then I close my eyes until his image comes into focus
And I smile when it does.

If I'd been with him when his time came,
What would I have said? I think I know.
I would not have said goodbye to my father.
I simply would have said "Don't go."
